The closing night is Carl Stone’s – well, his name tops the bill, but it wouldn’t exist without powerful Japanese vocalist Akaihirume. He’s in black, with a hat out of Leonard Cohen’s closet, seated amid the audience behind his mixer; she’s onstage, clad in white, head close-cropped. The work is Re:Gendo, a multi-channel excursion through Asia, experienced vicariously through wildly transformed field recordings, both audio and visual. Stone takes the audience on a trip through something that never feels quite real, yet remains familiar. Akaihirume’s presence grows as the trip proceeds, her voice emphasising shrieks, moans and chanting. Meanwhile images morph on the wall, dissolving as if LSD were a computer plug-in.
